SecPop calculates estimated population and economic data around any point specified by latitude and longitude. The Nuclear
Regulatory Commission (NRC) adopted SecPop to perform siting reviews for nuclear power-plant construction and license
applications.
SecPop Version 4.3.0 utilized 2010 census data and 2007 economic data, which is the most recent available at the time. At
the same time SecPop 4.3.0 was created to be compatible with 2000 census and 2002 economic data. SecPop 4.3.0 supports
site analysis, which evaluates population, land use, and economic data on a polar grid centered on a prescribed site.
Population estimates are made using block level census data and economic estimates are made using county level data.
The current version of SecPop 4.4.0 supports previous functionality and adds updated population data from the 2020 U.S.
Census. Updated economic and land use data from the 2017 database is included as well. In addition, data for Alaska and
Hawaii is added (previous versions of SecPop only incorporated data for the contiguous United States). The software is
updated to run on the Java 17 platform and the documentation clarifies how population and economic multipliers are applied
to the non-farm wealth per capita.
